Just a reminder to be sure to send extra clothes with your student for accidents and/or wet clothes from playing outside.  We are in need of any size gently used pants/bottoms and socks.  Any donations are greatly appreciated.

    Background Knowledge
It is so powerful for our students to have some background knowledge (information about a topic that they have already discussed or experienced to better understand a situation or probelm) prior to learning new concepts.  Below you will find the upcoming topics that students will be learning about in Literacy and Math for each grade level.  Having conversations with your students about what they are currently learning and what might be coming up benefits a student greatly.

4K is learning about holiday traditions. Two books they will focus on this month are Jingle Bells and Gingerbread Baby. They are learning about concepts of print (where to start reading, which way to go when we read, letters and words, etc), using the ABC linking chart, and how to talk to partners about the books they're reading.
In math 4K students will be learning about shapes in December! The focus will be on rectangles and squares. Did you know that a square is a special kind of rectangle? Stay tuned as our 4K students become Shape Experts!

5K is studying traditional literature (including different versions of Goldilocks and the Three Bears as well as The Tortoise and the Hare for example) and is learning about how stories have characters, a setting, and a beginning, middle, and end. They are working to retell stories in a logical sequence. They are using comprehension strategies like predicting, summarizing, and making connections. Kindergarten students are writing personal narratives (true stories about themselves) and are working to include the characters, the setting, and a beginning, middle, and end in their writing.

In math Kindergarteners continue to tell math stories and begin to use a break apart stick to show each of the parts (partners) which make up the whole (total). They are learning how to show addition and subtraction!

1st grade is also studying traditional literature (Sylvester and the Magic Pebble, The Three Billy Goats Gruff, and Jack and the Beanstalk for example). Students are using comprehension strategies like predicting, questioning, summarizing, and making connections to understand the various types of literature. They're also working to understand the author's message or the lesson the story can teach us. First graders are writing personal narratives (true stories about themselves) and are working to focus in on a small moment story. They're working on adding details and elaboration to their writing and writing strong leads and conclusions.

In math 1st grade students in first grade are learning how to solve for unknown totals AND unknown partners when adding and subtracting! They continue to use their counting on strategies! For ex.: ____ + 4 = 7

    Parent Calendar Change:
KASD Board of Education approved a change in the 2019-2020 parent calendar.  The change is in February, moving a day off from Friday, February 21st to Monday, February 17th, 2020.  This change will enable certified staff and administrators the opportunity to attend a regional professional development conference with nearly 3000 other educators from more than 20 districts throughout Wisconsin.
You can find the revised printable parent calendar by clicking HERE.

    Lunch Options for Tanner:
In an effort to ensure all students get the scheduled lunch recess time, we moved from two hot lunch options to one hot lunch option.  This started on Monday September 16th.  The current menu can be found on the district web site or by clicking Tanner Menu.  Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.
