October 2017

Notes from the Principal......

Happy October, Tanner Families!
The first month of school has officially come to a close.  The students have learned quite a bit about school procedures and classroom routines.  They are catching on quickly and adjusting nicely to the new school year.

The new Day 1 - Day 6 schedule has been one of our new routines this year that has proven to be a learning curve for all of us.  Though it has been tricky to remember what is happening on each day, the change has been extremely beneficial for students as they are able to experience more time in special classes (Music, Art, Physical Education, Library & S.T.E.A.M).  The change is also great for our staff.  We have been spending a great deal of time collaborating on student needs, reviewing data, and taking part in professional learning opportunities provided by our Math and Literacy Coaches.  If you have any questions about our D1-D6 schedule do not hesitate to contact me or your child's teacher.  As the winter months approach, our D1-D6 schedule will not change due to inclement weather closures.

The Kaukauna community offers many exciting opportunities for our students to be involved in fun activities throughout the year.  We will provide those community flyers for you on our district website.  Click here for a direct link to all October communications.  This month you will find:

Boys Hoops Club - Grades 2 - 4
The Great Pumpkin Train Grades 4K - 4
Girl Scout Flyer - Grades K - 4
Chartwell's October Calendar and Information
Kaukauna Dance Team Clinic Grades 4K - 4
Kaukauna Dance Team Registration

This month is sure to fly by!  We have picture day on October 5, our PBIS Open House event, Red Ribbon Week, Fire Safety presentations, numerous field trips, and of course...Halloween!  Enjoy the beautiful fall foliage and I hope you find this newsletter to be informative and helpful.

Thank you for supporting Tanner and your child's education!
Liz Thoreson

News from...
Mrs. Sundelius - school nurse

Is my child too sick to go to school?  Often parents have a hard time deciding if their child is well enough to go to school.
Ask yourself the following question - Is my child feeling up to participating in regular school activities; including recess? Having a sore throat, cough, or mild congestion does not necessarily mean a child can't be active and participate in school activities, however if they are lethargic, clingy, complaining of pain or just not acting like themselves perhaps a sick day is in order.
Of course, never send a child to school who has a fever (even when their temperature is normal with fever reducing medication), is nauseated, vomiting, or has diarrhea. If your child is experiencing any one of these symptoms they need to stay home for 24 hours after the symptoms subside.

If you do bring your child into the doctor, remember to get a doctor’s excuse for school so your child’s attendance can be coded as a medical excuse.  Thank you in advance for helping all students and staff stay healthy.

Art news - Mrs. Siegel

Welcome to the new school year!  This year all students receive art for an hour in the Day 1-6 schedule.    Students  created a square project for the annual “Square1Art” fundraiser that will benefit the art room to build an art room library.   The art projects will be sent to the Square1Art company and will be returned with an order form around mid-November.  Any products ordered that are printed with your child’s artwork will be shipped early December and ready for holiday gift-giving.  More information will be coming.
Kindergarters created a "color wheel turtle" for their Square1Art project.  They colored a color wheel with markers after learning about this new wheel, and then cut it out and glued it to a square that was colored with textures and crayons (texture rubbings).  Cut paper was used to add the head, legs, and tails, and black Sharpies and white charcoal pencils were used to add textures and details.

First graders created a "Mondrian turtle."  They learned about this new artist and his vertical and horizontal lines and primary colored squares and rectangles.  A circle was cut out of white paper, and then black tape was used for the lines, and red, yellow, and blue markers were used to color the shapes.  Textures and crayons (texture rubbings) were used to color the background, and cut paper was used to add the details to the turtle.  Black Sharpies and white charcoal pencils were used to add details and textures.

All students worked on their following direction skills and their fine motor skills.

Art news - Mr. Theder

Kindergarten Artists worked on their shape person, and then created an accurate representation of Mondrian's Composition II for square one art. They learned how to cut safely with a scissors, glue, and their primary colors. More information will be coming soon about square one art.

First Grade Artists worked on their shape person, and finished it up with fine details. They got to look and talk about abstraction and Kandinsky circles. First grade will be doing their Kandinsky circles as their square one art project. They reviewed their primary colors and learned their secondary colors. More information will be coming soon about square one art.

Library update - Miss Brown
Welcome to the new school year! This year 4K students come to the library for library checkout once in the Day 1-6 schedule and 5K through 1st grade students come to the library twice in the Day 1-6 schedule, once for library skills and once for library checkout.

Below is some information regarding new library procedures:

  1. All library materials are due back the day before checkout. Below are the following days for when books are due back to the library:

    • Mrs. B.’s class books are due on Day 4
    • Mrs. Conger’s class books are due on Day 4
    • Mrs. Gloudeman’s class books are due on Day 3
    • Mrs. Nelson’s class books are due on Day 4
    • Mrs. Neumann’s  class books are due on Day 1
    • Mrs. Vande Voort’s class books are due on Day 4
    • Mrs. Bartel’s class books are due on Day 4
    • Mrs. Bowen’s class books are due on Day 4
    • Mrs. Fitzgerald’s  class books are due on Day 4

    • Mrs. Vanderloop’s class books are due on Day 4
    • All 4K student books are due back on Day 6

  1. As the year progresses your student might forget to return a library book, and that is okay. Here is what we do at Tanner to help you and your student when a book is forgotten to be brought back:
    • We print off 2 copies of a friendly reminder slip (one for you and one for the library) with their name on it and the book title(s) that is/are missing highlighted, along with a stamp that states “Tanner Library Please Return Items”. We understand that life gets really busy and library books can often be forgotten, that is why we send home a friendly reminder slip.

    • We check everywhere! We check the student’s backpack, classroom, and the library to make sure the book was not forgotten somewhere at school or misplaced in the library.

    • Students are still able to check out one more library book. Until the missing book/books is/are found or contact has been made by the library staff to the parents and/or guardians.

If you receive a note home about a missing book please look around your home for the book. Often times they can be found between home and school. If you find it great, just send it with your student to school the next day and they will be able to bring home another book. If you cannot find it please send a note to school. We will check again, and a member of the library staff will be in contact with you shortly. You will never be assessed a fine or fee without contact from a member of the library staff.

Thank You and Happy Reading!

Music notes - Mrs. Stangel

In September our Kindergartners and 1st graders have been doing a lot of singing, moving and listening in music class. In Kindergarten we’ve sung our Hello songs, Mi Cuerpo, If You’re Happy and You Know It, and the Apple Song. In 1st grade we’ve been working on America – My Country ‘tis of Thee, from our 1st grade music textbook. In 1st grade we also study a birthday composer each month. Our September composer of the month was George Gershwin. Gershwin was an American composer who combined classical music with jazz and the popular music of his day to create his own unique style. His brother, Ira, often wrote the lyrics for George’s songs. We listened to a number of different versions of I Got Rhythm.

Gym news - Ms. Wells

Hello Tanner Families! My name is Brooke Wells and I am the new Kindergarten and 1st grade physical education teacher. This is my second year in the Kaukauna Area School District. I am so excited to be a Tanner Tiger! :)

The school year is off to a great start in PE. We started by learning all about the rules of the gym, SAFETY being the most important! We also learned about locomotor movements (walk, run, skip, gallop, hop, jump, and slide). One of our favorite ways to practice locomotor movements is tag. We played all sorts of tag games: high 5 tag, mirror tag, fire and ice tag, just to name a few.

This year there is a Word Wall in the gym. The Word Wall is a board where we put all the “important” words in physical education class. In the month of September, we added locomotor, walk, run, skip, gallop, hop, jump, and slide to our Word Wall.

 Guidance news - Mrs. Charneski
During the month of October, I will be visiting all of the Kindergarten and 1st grade with students about Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Awareness (ATODA)! In each grade level we will discuss Red Ribbon Week and celebrate living a healthy and drug free life.  Kindergarten and 1st grades will brainstorm healthy habits and learn that drugs and alcohol can have harmful effects.  They will also learn medicine safety.  All classes will be focusing on the benefits of living a healthy and drug free life!  In addition,  I will visit 4K classes where we will learn about healthy bodies and healthy choices!  As always, feel free to call me at 766-6150 or email me at charneskik@kaukaunasd.org  with any questions or concerns.

SMALL GROUP COUNSELING
Starting at the end of September, I will be initiating several Super Trooper Groups in which we will focus on specific school skills such as:  Listening, Following Directions, Body Basics and Self-Control.  If your child is invited to participate in the great opportunity, you will receive a letter home in their take home folder describing the group and our goals!

INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING
Can be provided on an as needed basis for short term social/emotional concerns.  Students may be referred by self, teacher or parent.

Red Ribbon Week
During the week of October 23rd to October 25th, we will celebrate RED RIBBON WEEK…a week dedicated to celebrating a healthy and drug free life!
All Kaukauna schools will be participating in various activities that promote drug free living.  Students will participate in several dress-up days to raise awareness of the importance of living a drug free life!  The elementary dress-up days are as follows:

PBIS update...
At Tanner School, we are safe, respectful and responsible. We worked hard with the students to understand how to be safe, respectful and responsible in the hallway, bathroom, classroom, lunchroom, playground and on the bus.  Along with focusing on our three expectations, we will also be teaching the students a character trait each month:  respect, responsibility, caring, fairness, citizenship, and trustworthiness.  We will talk with the students about how they can demonstrate the character trait at school, home and in the community.  This month, our focus will be RESPECT. We will kick off this month with an assembly on October 9. During the assembly, students will be shown a video of what respect means at school. Then, in the classroom, a book on respect will be delivered in the Tiger Tote bag to share with students. At home, you could follow up with your child by asking them what respect means and how do they show respect at home or when they are in the community.
We hope to see you at our Open House on October 10 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Thank you to the PAC for supporting our PBIS activities this year!
